Goodwill Free Income Tax Sites to Open January 23, 2017

Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois is operating its free income tax preparation and filing sites beginning January 23, 2017. Phone lines are now open to take appointments at all sites.

This will be the 8^th year that Goodwill offers this service in conjunction with the IRS and the United Way of the Rock River Valley. Goodwill’s tax sites offer free tax preparation and filing to individuals and families with income less than $54,000.  Goodwill’s IRS certified volunteer tax preparers will also assist community members in claiming any special credits and deductions for which they may be eligible.

“We are happy to continue this much needed program that has assisted over 12,000 residents in obtaining over $13 million in refunds that go directly back to this community”, states Jason Haller, Financial Programs Manager.

Goodwill’s free tax sites will be hosted at the following locations:

• Rockford Goodwill Mission Services Center – 850 N. Church Street, Rockford, IL
  • Mondays – 9am to 5pm
  • Wednesdays – 8:30am to 12:30pm and 4pm to 8pm.
  • Select Fridays – 9am to 4pm
  • Saturdays – 9am to 2pm

• Rock Valley College – Woodward Technology Center – 3301 N. Mulford Rd., Rockford, IL
  • Thursdays – 3pm to 8pm

• Northern Illinois University – Holmes Student Center – 600 Lucinda Ave., DeKalb, IL
  • Tuesdays – 11:30am to 7pm

Goodwill is also offering Federal and State tax filing online through the My Free Taxes Program. For those who earn less than $64,000 and would like to complete their own taxes online, free of charge, they can go to http://www.unitedway.org/myfreetaxes.

Last year, Goodwill’s tax sites served 2,636 individuals and returned over $3.5 million to the community.   Additionally, the program saved participants over $419,000 in tax preparation fees.
